The Institute For Shipboard Education
Mission Statement

Note: The following information comes from Semester At Sea's "A Voyage Of Discovery" brochure.

Humankind's pursuit of knowledge has been intricately linked to ships and the sea. From early civilizations to the modern era, the exploration of distant lands, the exchange of ideas and commodities, and the search for knowledge have occurred in this manner.

The Institute for Shipboard Education exists out of the recognition that, in an increasingly interdependent world, there is a vital need to advance the exchange of knowledge and understanding between cultures. The Institute is defined by its on-going commitment to combine academic excellence with challenging experiential programming, in order to remain at the forefront of global education.

The Institute offers programs in international education that incorporate direct contact with people and their cultures. These programs afford the opportunity to develop cross-cultural understandings of human commonalities and global interdependence, while simultaneously recognizing, defining and respecting individual potentials and cultural diversities.

The Institute's approach to international and cultural education provides the framework for a lifetime of learning, concern and commitment to others.
