Images from India

We docked in Madras, India on the 26th of October. Out of all the ports we visited, India left the strongest impression on me. The poverty, the richness, the beauty, the smells, the children--it was an experience I will never forget.

I spent a day in Mahabalapurim, where I swam in the Bay of Bengal. The water was very warm and very salty. It's beauty took me by surprise--the mixture of golden sand, palm trees, evergreens and ocean is just amazing.

With other students, I went to visit a village of "untouchables"--the lowest caste of people in India. Children swarmed around us begging us for anything we could give them. I had a large pack of Trident gum and I had to split each tiny piece in half just to be able to give each child something. This made them very happy. A boy named Murugan (pronoiunced like "Morgan") and his sister took me by the hand and showed me where they lived. There are pictures below.
