Images from IndonesiaWe docked in Djakarta, Indonesia on the 16th of October. Spent time shopping for batik and gems. I had been chosen to go on a "home visit" arranged by the Rotary Club of Indonesia. It was a terrific experience. Along with 2 other students, I spent most of a day with an Indonesian family who treated us like royalty. About 15 members of their family came to greet us. They served us wonderful Indonesian foods (fried bananas were wonderful!) and taught us about their country. I played piano and guitar for them, and sang with another student, and they thought that was just wonderful. After dinner we played ping pong and watched an Indonesian folk music show on television. The family gave us each a doll representing their country. I gave them a bicentennial dollar coin along with a letter explaining its significance. Also in Indonesia I had a run-in with some not-so-nice people. While I was walking through an open-air market (very close to the outdoor barber pictured below) my backpack was knifed. Somebody was trying to get the contents to spill out into the street so they could rob me. Luckily, nothing was stolen. I visited Bogar, where there were beautiful botanical gardens. I took a lot of pictures of children. The people in Indonesia really seem to smile more than your average American. NOTE: Click on an image to view it enlarged.
