Semester At Sea®
International Field Experience

Note: The following information comes from Semester At Sea's "A Voyage Of Discovery" brochure.

The Field Program is an integral part of Semester at Sea, actively involving you in the countries visited. Each semester's itinerary is carefully selected to provide you with the opportunity for a comparative approach to global education. Port stays of four to seven days offer a first-hand look at the societies you will be studying in the classroom. Educational activities on land are designed to complement classroom instruction, and field work provides 20% of the contact hours for course credit. Semester at Sea's Field Program contains a variety of structured activities that enable you to fulfill academic requirements while accommodating a diverse range of interests, travel experiences, and budgets.

Field practica are many and varied. Some provide opportunities for travel to places of significant cultural, historical and political interest. Visit the Great Wall in China, the Taj Mahal in India or the Great Pyramids in Egypt. Learn about wildlife, ecological issues, and the life of the Masai while on safari in Kenya. Or, study the flora and fauna of the tropical rain forest and learn about rain forest destruction while canoeing down the Amazon River. Other field activities provide the opportunity for direct interaction with local people. Spend the night in an untouchable" village in India, visit a black township in South Africa, or interact with local business and professional leaders. Meet university students through welcome receptions, home stays, sports competitions, and lectures/discussions held on nearby campuses.

Still other field activities are designed to meet the specific needs of individual classes. These Faculty-Directed Practica are typically designed and led by faculty members who have drawn on their own international experience. Attend an Afro-Venezuelan Drum Workshop, a Candomble Ceremony in Brazil, or a Sufi Dervish Brotherhood Meeting in Turkey. Talk with the street children in Brazil, members of the Congress of South African Writers, leaders of the Friends of the Earth environmental organization in Malaysia, housing authorities in Hong Kong, or corporate officials of Toshiba or Sanyo in Japan.

This is just a sampling of the many field activities available during a voyage. These international field experiences, coupled with a stimulating on,board classroom environment, make Semester at Sea an exceptional opportunity for learning.
